Barnhall 18s win 10-a-side blitz in D.C.U. 21st of Sept 2008
|
The Under 18s travelled to DCU on Sunday to play in a Metropolitan Area Competition. Not only did the young bulls win the competition, they hammered all their opponents in style and had the fantastic achievement of not conceding a point in three matches. The format for the blitz was games of 30 minute duration with a try being the only method of scoring (no conversions or penalties).
The first game was against Suttonians which initially proved to be a tough encounter with the Sutton team having a very big and heavy pack. However a solid defence from the blues kept them in the driving seat and they went into half time with a 10-0 lead. An improved second half led to more possession and the blues taking control. The final score was 25 – 0.
The second encounter was against a decent Terenure side which had some good talent. But again, the solid Barnhall defence was unbreakable. The blues showed good patience and when possession came, their excellent handling skills and off-loads was too much for Terenure. The final score was 30-0 and this placed Barnhall in the final.
The challenge for the silverware was against the hosts, Unidare who had blown away the teams in their pool. But Barnhall were determined to upset the party. The final game showed Barnhall hit their stride. And although down to just two substitutes due to injuries (as opposed to Unidare's pool of over 20 players) the young bulls fitness was supreme. With every minute, they increased the pace. Playing beautiful running rugby, they just seemed to take total control. As the game went on, Unidare's fitness failed and Barnhall were rampant, running in try after try from their own half, often with the entire team in support looking for the ball. The final score was 55 – 0 with Andy Birchall claiming five of the tries. The clean sheet in every match really pleasing the coaches.
The unofficial player of the tournament was the Barnhall scrum-half Darren Higgins who was outstanding in every match, his superior fitness showing, and a just reward for having trained all summer.
This was also the last outing for the club for Joe Taylor who was given the honour of captaincy for the blitz. Joe is off to play schools rugby and the coaches wish him every success in his next two years and hope to see him come straight back to play in the Blue for many a season.

Barnhall (U20's) 17 v Bucaneers 8 21st of Sept 2008
|
In a tough physical encounter Barnhall took the spoils to win 17 points to 8 on a beautiful sunny afternoon at Barnhall. The Buccaneers for their part produced a very abrasive and physical performance competing for every ball available. With the Barnhall pack producing a good platform with a strong set piece plus some terrific defence from all, it was left to the young bull's back 3 to produce the scores with Willy Reynolds touching down early in the first half then Darren Finnegan and Mark Kenny touching down in the second, Leo Quinn converting one. The Buccaneers scores came from a penalty early on and a try after a period of intense pressure at the start of the second half, where they were camped on the Barnhall try line for multiple phases and eventually crashing over.
This performance was another pleasing performance, and the Barnhall coaches will be pleased with their team's endeavours.

Barnhall V Terenure U20's 14 th Sept 2008
Terenure 20 Barnhall 3
|
This was the 2nd run out of the year for Barnhall and it was away against top opposition, Terenure, who are in the opposite end of the draw in the JP Flannigan league.
In a tense and physical affair, Terenure took the spoils after Barnhall disappointingly leaked 2 soft tries, 1 in each half, that were converted and also gave away 2 penalties from lack of discipline in crucial areas. The only score from Barnhall was a well taken penalty kick early on from Leo Quinn. Positives of the game were the set piece, which again went very well, and a good showing from the backline, well marshalled by Leo Quinn with “Kangaroo” Jack Archdale in only his 2 nd game for Barnhall, showing good form in the centre while deputising for the injured Eamon Daly.
The young Bulls will learn their lessons from this defeat and take that into their next game where their discipline must improve.
Next up for the young bulls is Buccaneers at Barnhall, Sunday 21 st Sept, 12:30 kick off.

Athy / Cill Dara U20s v Barnhall U18s 11th of Sept 2008
|
The first outing of the season showed the Barnhall U18s in flying form. Although ultimately suffering a 17-24 defeat, the performance against an older side put a smile on the faces of the coaches.
The two clubs of Athy RFC & Cill Dara RFC have combined at U20s to form A.C.Pirates. The size difference ultimately proved a bit too much for some of the younger members of the Barnhall squad. Barnhall took an early lead and showed very strong in the first half. However the nine changes made at half time to play all the squad proved to be a turning point. This gave the home team an edge and they started to bully the Blues with strong work from their pack. In the next 20 minutes the U20s outfit scored three tries. In the last third of the match the Barnhall team was changed again and once more started to dominate. One of the most pleasing things of the performance was the Blues total dominance in the line-out. Add to this a scrum that was rock solid and an abundance of pace in the backs and things look promising.
The next few games will see the return of Conor O'Sullivan, Paul Flaherty, Keith Moran, Stephen Hynes, Mark Canavan, Jeff El-Damasi, Richie Landers, Colin O'Reilly & Kevin White. Several of these players will be expected to make the starting line up and so the Barnhall U18s should get even stronger.

Two of the Barnhall Ladies 1st XV have been selected for the Leinster squad Shona Doyle and Orla Fitzsimons. Last years coach Kevin Sheil contacted barnhallrfc.com to speak of his delight that the two girls had been selected for Leinster " I always knew there was something special about Orla & Shona" Kevin who is away in Iraq selling cars and bikes also reckons it wont be long before "We see these girls in the emerald green of Ireland". |
Barnhall 20's versus Newbridge 20's 7th of Sept 2008
Barnhall 50 Newbridge 0
|
The first game of the season for Barnhall 20's was a friendly against Newbridge 20's at Barnhall. Newbridge came to the game high in confidence after an earlier good result, beating the Leinster youths 10_8 in their previous outing.
It started in a tense, typical season opener, Barnhall showing a few cobwebs that needed to be blown out and blown out they were! After 15 minutes the Barnhall side turned down the opportunity of an easy 3 pointer in front of the posts to opt for a scrum. With the scrum going well the decision proved fruitfull and blind side flanker Sean O'Mara went over for the first try of the afternoon. Newbridge gave it their all but caught Barnhall on a fine sunny aftrenon playing the brand of rugby they have succesfully developed for the past few seasosn. The young bulls run in a total of 8 tries and 5 conversions, scorers were Padraig Beatty with a hat trick, Sean O'Mara and Alan O'Reilly with 1 try a piece, Eamon Daly with 2, and Kangaroo Jack Ashdale with a try on his debut, Leo Quinn scoring 5 conversions.
This was a pleasing opener for the 20's where the Barnhall coaches were happy with the afternoons efforts. Next up for the Young Bulls is Terenure College away, 14th Sept 2pm KO, which will prove a tough test and a good yard stick for the season ahead.
