Clondalkin RFC 22 v Barnhall J5 17 - 30 January 2010 .... Posted: 31st of January 2010

Analysing previous matches, Barnhall knew that the first ten minutes of this game would be critical and they started well. Richie O'Reilly lead the line with some crunching takles from the beginning and a marker was laid down, this was not going to be an easy day for Clondalkin, However, fifteen minutes in, communication in defence let Barnhall down and Clondalkin were in for an easy try between the posts. Kick converted, seven nil. Not long afterwards, Clondalkin were in again but this time the kick was missed. Twelve nil. Trailing by a couple of tries was becoming known territory for Barnhall ..more

England Legends v Ireland Legends.... Posted: 29th of January 2010

On the evening of Friday 26th  February the inaugural  England Legends v Ireland Legends match for the  Stuart Mangan Memorial Cup  is being held at The Stoop, Twickenham.  The Legends charity match, a fundraiser for paralysed rugby players, will provide the perfect opener to a great weekend of rugby with the Six Nations clash the following day.

The Legends game will see some of the big names of English and Irish rugby go head-to-head one more time, with those involved including Shane Byrne, Martin Corry, Rob Henderson, Jason Robinson, David Humphreys, Mike Catt, Richard Wallace, Josh Lewsey, Conor O'Shea, Jason Leonard and Peter Clohessy, to name but a few.

After the game there will be plenty of entertainment - bands playing in the main bar and plenty of food and drinks to be had to make a great night of it. Corporate hospitality is also available for those who would be interested.

The game was conceived to raise money for Stuart Mangan, who was paralysed from the high neck following a rugby accident whilst playing for Hammersmith & Fulham RFC in April 2008. Stuart required 24hour medical care for his every basic need, and The Stuart Mangan Appeal was launched to fundraise with patrons including Keith Wood , Ronan O'Gara and Jason Leonard . Stuart sadly passed away in August 2009 having contracted pneumonia, but his family have chosen for the match to go ahead in his memory and to raise necessary funds to support other injured players.

With this in mind, the beneficiary charities from the proceeds of the Legends game are Keith Wood 's Paralysed Rugby Players' Fund , The Matt Hampson Trust and the IRFU Charitable Trust . Matt Hampson suffered a similar accident to Stuart whilst training with England U-21s and provided friendship and support to Stuart. The Legends game is kindly sponsored by the Byrne Group and ValidusRe, so 100% of the funds raised will go to these deserving charities.

We are aiming to sell all 12,000 seats at the game so we need to maximise awareness of the event.  We would very much appreciate it if you would forward this email to all of your individual club members and supporters and to anyone who you think would be interested in attending the game. Also, if you could include this information on your Club website and/or in your club's newsletters and on notice boards, it would be most appreciated. We can post you some leaflets and posters if you require, please do let me know.

You can purchase tickets (£10 for adults and £5 for kids) and find information on the teams and Corporate Hospitality contacts by clicking on the link below.

A.I.L League Saturday 23rd of January 2010 .... Posted: 27th of January 2010

An Icy fog didn't deter the crowds from visiting rifle Park on Saturday for the Banbridge RFC V Barnhall game. The added interest in this game was the return of Irish international Rory Best following his recovery from a recent neck injury. Expectations were high for a tough game with both sides stepping up the efforts in the presence of such an experienced and accomplished international rugby player...more

J5 League Saturday 23rd of January 2010
.... Posted: 24th of January 2010

Due to adverse weather conditions experienced over the last month, it was 16 December when Barnhall last played, but the momentum from the victory achieved that day could still be felt within the squad. Weather too was to effect the day with havy fog enveloping Parsonstown. So much so that the referee conferred with the Leinster Branch for guidance as to whether the match should be played. As the referee could see the posts clearly on either end of the pitch from half way, the game was to go ahead ...more

J4 League Barnhall 14 AIB 5.... Posted: 18th of January 2010

Barnhall travelled to the DCU Sports complex in Glasnevin last Saturday 18 th of January to take on AIB in the J4 league. This was Barnhall's first game of the New Year following nearly 4 weeks of inactivity due to the inclement weather. The game was played on a very heavy pitch but on an otherwise good day for rugby.

Barnhall started well but this game was really dictated by the underfoot conditions that effected Barnhall's running game. In what was a hard hitting affair Barnhall dominated the early exchanges and put AIB under pressure. However they were not able to put this territorial advantage into points on the scoreboard. It was 25 minutes into the game when Barnhall struck first blood. Possession was won after a lineout and the ball made its way to Paul ‘Gippy' Corscadden to burst over from 20 meters out with an electric burst of pace. Leo Turley converted the extra points to put Barnhall in the lead 7 nil.

From the restart Barnhall gathered possession and a fantastic break from Albert Nagel almost led to a second try for Luke Ingleton who unfortunately dropped the baby, sorry ball just inches from the line. Shortly after this Turley was wide with a long range penalty effort. It was now that AIB had a period of pressure that almost saw them score but Barnhall's strong defence held them out and left the half time score 7 nil.

Barnhall began the second half down to 14 men after Rusty O'Neill was found guilty of a professional foul on the stroke of halftime. This was a blot on Rusty's exemplary record of never before receiving a yellow card however he sacrificed himself for the good of the team and stopped a certain AIB try.

This incident would have implications early in the second half as Jonathan Geoghan, who has just returned after a long injury layoff was denied a certain try and the referee had no alternative but to award a penalty try. Jonathan's efforts in overcoming a life threatening injury that would have stalled other rugby player's careers were rewarded by an excellent cameo appearance for 30 minutes. Unfortunately he winded himself tacking the biggest man on the field, but what a hit and had to go off. The try was converted by Turley and Barnhall lead 14 to nil with 20 minutes left. AIB began to push for a consolation and with about 10 minutes left got in for a very lucky try when the ball bounced the wrong way for Barnhall and straight into AIB wingers hands for an easy score. The conversion was missed. Barnhall defended magnificently for the last 10 minutes to hold out AIB and some massive tackles from Luke and Gippy in the centres, Albert, Collie Quinn and Mark Lundy kept AIB out. In fact the entire back row of Kieran Moloney, Mark Lundy and Michael ‘Trev' Mullins reinventing himself as a 6 were immense.

AIB had one last chance to score a penalty but with the last kick of the game they missed and the score finished 14 5.

This was a really good team performance against an AIB team determined not to wilt as they had done when we first met them last October. This game marked the first outing since injury to Darragh Stafford who broke his arm in the corresponding fixture and it was great to see him back. For a team that was hardly able to train for the last 4 weeks due to the weather there was a brilliant team spirit and will to win from everyone on board. Apart from those mentioned others to impress were Neil Beatty and Shane Hogan. So Barnhall are now 5 points ahead of the chasing pack on top of the j4 league with two home games to come. Next Saturday they are at home to Stillorgan.
