Queens do just enough to deny Barnhall a share of the spoils.
Queens RFC 12 Barnhall RFC 5. 23rd of Feb 2009
|
Barnhall RFC made the journey to Dub Lane in Belfast to meet high flying Queens RFC in perfect sunny dry conditions on Saturday. A fast start by the students was repulsed by terrific first up tackles by Barnhall with David Stuart and Daryl Furlong setting the tone for the day from the outset. ...more

Under 18s start preparations for the Cup. 23rd of Feb 2009
|
Only twice in our history have we won the prestigious Culliton Cup, the premier trophy in Leinster Youth Rugby. The first time it was won, most of those players are now retired from the adult game it was so far back, and then a huge gap in time till last season. As holders of the cup, there is much pressure on the current U18s to perform well.
The league campaign was very mixed and the loss of vital players for most of the campaign proved too much. Probably the most vital position on the pitch is scrum half and our U18s were missing the highly talented Darren Higgins for the entire competition. Darren started the season well, having trained with Leinster section A schools over the summer but the season was hampered by a badly broken nose and then a hefty suspension following a red card for foul play. The young bulls also missed hooker Kevin White for many games with a shoulder injury. Kevin was in the Leinster Youth squad and is arguably the best line out thrower of his age in the province and subsequently, line outs became problematic.
Now furnished with a full squad, things are brighter for the cup campaign and preparations are under way. The draw held mixed fortunes with the hot favourites (and current all Ireland champions) Wicklow on the opposite side of the draw. The down side was that the first game is away to Dundalk. The Louth team boast several Leinster stars and are a very well organised side and any visitor to the Dundalk ground knows how hard it is to get a win there.
With the Dundalk game on 14 th March, there is time for a couple of friendly games in preparation. Last Saturday saw the boys visit Swords but the north side team proved little resistance with a result of 95 – 5 to Barnhall. Total domination in the set piece and the loose against a weak defence resulted in a total miss match. Playing Clane this Thursday at home under lights, the coaches are hoping for a tougher test.
Our under 18s are managed by John Taylor, head coach & defence coach; Joe Looby jnr. forwards coach & Keith Bewley, backs coach. The team is captained by Peter Hall.

Brilliant Barnhall blitz near neighbours Naas.
Barnhall 28 Naas 10. 2nd of Feb 2009
|
Barnhall collected full points in the all Kildare decider at Parsonstown on Saturday. The win was fashioned over a series of games where the Barnhall pack displayed flashes of intensity and urgency at the breakdown. For the entire first half the Barnhall pack maintained this high level of intensity and effectively wiped out any ambition Naas had in taking the points from this game. ...more
