Head 2 Head Ards.... Posted: 27th of Sept 2009
|
Barnhall's campaign opens with three consecutive games against Ulster clubs in October. First up is a visit to Hamilton Park to play Ards. The Blue Bulls are on a hat-trick of victories at the venue but have been successful on only one of their last seven visits to the northern province. The peninsula club has won all of their AIL games and their two AIBC games at home to visiting Leinster clubs during the past three seasons.

Barnhall U19s TEAM NEWS . .... Posted: 14th of Sept 2009
|
Selection for the front row reached crisis point this week when prop Conor O'Melia declared he is moving to Kerry to attend college. Added to the list of absentees are another two front row players, Kevin White (ex-Leinster Youths) and Craig Mullally who both have long term injuries.
Players had to quickly learn new skills this week.
Stephen Hynes, an open-side flanker has moved in to hooker and done a great job, but his 5'7” frame is dwarfed beside the new tight head, Barry Doran who stands at 6'6”, who must now be the tallest tight head prop in the country. In fairness to Barry, he did a terrific job in a difficult position and surprisingly the Barnhall scrum was pretty solid in Friday's game.
A new addition to the Barnhall team was local Maynooth man and ex Castleknock College SCT captain, Daire Heneghan , who looks a bright prospect for the future. Daire, who's preferred position is at 6 or 8 made his debut for the Bulls in the second row and despite a bit of fatigue from not training for a while he had a solid game this Friday against his old school in a pre season friendly.
Friday's return fixture against Castleknock College was tough affair with the school just edging it 15-7. A tight game to the end gave many positives for the Barnhall side. The Blues backs ran well and fast, although a bit of consistency is still lacking with a few passes going astray. The pack had another good performance. Joey Hynes (making his return from sickness) was as usual, a giant in the line outs and tackled like a demon all day. He took the captaincy for the game and led by example. Darren Higgins at scrum half was back on track after an unusually poor performance last week and this set the back line up to use their potential more fully, linking well with new out half Peter Carr, who transferred from Swords this season.
Peter is a solid player and adds some steel to the back line. Coming off a good summer of rugby league with North Dublin Eagles, he has hit the ground running.
A new centre partnership of Colin O'Reilly and Luke Bray worked well and is a positive move full of promise.
Back to play for Barnhall after taking three years out for athletics is winger Darragh Magee. Son of ex Barnhall winger Kieran, good things are expected of Darragh who is the Leinster 100m gold medallist.
Friday's match was a very entertaining affair and could have gone either way right till the end. Castleknock took a blow when they lost their captain, (ex-Barnhall) Joe Taylor in the first half, who's welcome back to Parsonstown was a few stitches in his head from his best friend and Barnhall no:8 Conor Cribben, (who claims it was accidental).
This years squad is coached by John Taylor and Joe Looby jnr. who put the boys through their paces last season. They are joined by ex North Kildare first XV backs coach Terry Hegarty. Terry has fine rugby pedigree as a player with Portlaoise and Leinster Juniors and is very welcome to teach our young bulls.

Meanwhile in the Leinster U19s game against Ulster, Eddie Downes and Conor McDermott both started. Both Conor and Eddie have joined Barnhall this season whilst on rugby scholarships to N.U.I.Maynooth. Eddie previously played with Wicklow RFC and Conor with Dundalk RFC.

Barnhall U19s fall to Castleknock College in pre-season friendly. Played in good conditions in the Dublin 15 school, Barnhall succumbed to the good handling of the Castleknock back line .... Posted: 8th of Sept 2009
|
For Barnhall this was tough preparation for the forthcoming Leinster Premier League, for Castleknock College, it was a chance for head coach Andy Kenny to look at some of the upcoming players for the school's S.C.T.
The game was even throughout and much closer than the 27-0 final score suggests. The two packs matched each other and fought hard for the full 70 minutes and for much of the time, the Barnhall pack had the edge, turning over a fair bit of ball at the breakdown. Much of the credit must go to the Blue's back row of Conor Cribben, Michael Wade and Stephen Carroll. Cribben just kept popping up everywhere in defence, making some great cover tackles and the two flankers worked hard all day at the breakdown. Matched by some excellent scrummaging from Darren Smith and Stephen Hynes doing great work at the breakdown, the Barnhall pack looked very promising. Unfortunately, the backs did not have such a good day at the office with a few chances missed with unusually below par handling.
Despite being able to handle the Castleknock pack, when the school's backs moved the ball wide it was a stretch too far for the Blue's defence. Castleknock capitalising every time they had a hint of an overlap with great passing and good running lines. This was never more painful for Barnhall's coach John Taylor than when his son (and ex Barnhall full back) Joseph scored two of Castleknock's tries.
The game proved to be a success for both teams and a re-match takes place this Friday evening at 6:45pm in Barnhall's ground.

Barnhall J4/J5's .... Posted: 7th of Sept 2009
|
Barnhall J4/J5 made a great start to the season with a convincing 43-0 victory over Stillorgan at Bird Avenue on Saturday 5 th September. With a huge number of players still on holidays and playing GAA championship (and injured from the tag rugby season, hang your heads in shame lads!), it was a great opportunity to see some new players that have joined our club. The new and the old (not the young and the old!) gelled well running in 6 tries, converting 5 in addition to a penalty.
The performance bodes well for the season as Stillorgan will provide opposition at both J4 and J5 level when the leagues commence.
